Trying to share some vintage equipment with anyone interested and to help anyone that may want to purchase or work on these wonderful electronic devices. Over the past ten years, my channel has expanded into a few other areas. Now, I also occasionally work on Hendrix songs and teach you the techniques that Jimi Hendrix used in his playing. I call these techniques Jimi'isms. I work on getting the Jimi tone by using a smaller amp, the Tweed Bassman, which is the big brother of the very first Marshall amp. Lately, I have been focusing on Jimi's effects pedal and demo fuzzes, Uni-Vibe clones, Echoplexes, wah-wahs and Leslies.
After ten years and almost 800 videos later, I make enough money from Google to pay for strings. If you would like to support my channel, please send your donation to paypal.me/Millstap. I will always try to answer your comments and help you with guitar gear anyway I can. I also help people with amp purchases at millstap/.

Original 1970 Uni-Vibe Snippets
I put together a compilation of my Instagram posts for anyone that does not follow me on Instagram at millstaps_jimiisms. These are clips from a two week span when I had the pleasure of playing an original 1970 Uni-Vibe owned by my friend Nico of Sabbius Custom Shop Effects. In the first one, I had the fuzz cranked just for fun. It needs a little less distortion and more cranked amp to get the true Trower sound. In the second one, you can hear clearly how it works on a clean guitar in Jungle. The third snippet is me jamming over SRV and being too lazy to turn off the stereo.
All were done using my new Sunburst Partscaster with Q-Pickups from Croatia. That guitar turned out so well. My effects chain is in order: 1970 Uni-Vibe, Sabbadius Rainbow (Maui) fuzz, Detrick_FX wah-wah, Fulltone Supa-Trem (preamp only), Fulltone OCD v1.4, Framptone 3 Banger splitter box into a vintage 1963 Fender reverb then to a 1960 Tweed Bassman, and the other channel going to a 1964 Super Reverb to fill out the room sound.

The Best Wah-Wah I Have Ever Had
Переглядів 1,9 тис.5 місяців тому
A long time ago, in 1975, a friend of mine named Bert Wills came over to the house for a little jam; bertwillsmusic/. Well, he happened to bring over what I would find as the best sounding wah-wah I had ever played. It was an old Cry Baby in a white shell. That sound has stuck in my head for all these years and now I have finally found the wah-wah with the sound I heard that day. J...
My First Strat Partscaster - Details and Soundcheck

In this video, I discuss most of the parts I used for my first Strat Partscaster. I also play a little Hendrix soundcheck after the discussion. Here are links to the companies that supplied the parts: Little Wing is played three times main...
How To Rig Up a Strat Capacitor Test Jig on Your Strat

If you feel like testing your bag of caps, this is an easy way to do it. Don't ever spend more than $6.50 (Mojotone Vitamin T Paper-in Oil) for a Strat tone capacitor. Even the Fender Custom Shop uses run of the mill cheap caps in their builds. The capacitance value is the most important factor in your decision, .022 uF to .1 uF is the common range. In this video, I decided on the .047uF Mojoto...
Musikraft Strat Neck #5 - With a Few Changes

These are all the specs you will need to order a neck exactly like this one. Musikraft does such high quality work. The changes from the previous four necks are: 7105 (SS) "medium" frets (same dimensions of 6105's but Musikraft fret dimensions are slightly better IMO, .095" W x .047" H., the thin lacquer finish vs. the Fender oil finish, Fender Custom Shop 10/56 V .88" .99" neck profile (very p...
Another Jimi'ism Everyone Missed in "Wait Until Tomorrow"
Переглядів 2,2 тис.8 місяців тому
My OCD gets the best of me and I just need to make corrections to some of the other great tutorials on Jimi Hendrix's "Wait Until Tomorrow." There are quite a few that I don't get into but I start with the opening chords which Jimi only plays that way once throughout the whole song. From that point on, he does a new variation every time. NOTE: I'm always tuned down 1/2 step to Eb but always nam...
Mark Foley 50's "Rough Cut" Strat Tremolo - A Closer Look

In this video, I look over my new Mark Foley 50's "Rough Cut" Vintage Style Strat tremolo bridge for my first Partscaster that I will build in the next 2-3 weeks. It's called "rough cut" because of the rough unpolished edges. I also go over the MJT light one piece Alder Sunburst body, my Musikraft neck with the 10/56 V profile (both of which have not arrived), the VIPots, the Q-Pickups from Cro...

I felt I could get a lighter body and better finish than what Fender put on my '57 Reissue so I went with a body from MJT....

I basically gave up on all of my new recording gear. That stuff sucks. I'm selling everything and just doing what is fun for me, jamming to Hendrix records and hoping the Hendrix police don't arrest me. I may have a few videos coming: One of with the new Q Pickups from Croatia, 1964 Formvars. And maybe a low profile cord for upside down Strat players from Ampturco Guitar Werks. I am using both ...

How to Play Earth Blues from People, Hell, and Angels - Part 2

This is the slower breakdown of the song. The Jimi'isms in this song are his open string use and his rhythm precision and pace. What a master at rhythm. The lyrics are also profound. We (Earth) have got the blues. A link to me playing the full song is at the end of this video.
Be Careful When Mounting a new Musikraft or Warmoth Neck to a Vintage Strat

Happy Easter! This is a Public Service Announcement to hopefully alleviate any heartaches from cracking your new, especially Roasted Maple, neck. I broke this into two parts so I could get this out there because the break down in Part 2 is going to take a little more editing. If you are interested, check back for Part 2 in a few days. I also wanted to see how my audio translated to UA-cam after compression. This is somewhat rough in places because I didn't want to do multiple takes. It's not an easy song to get through without some muffs...
How To Test Transformer Turns Ratio with a Sprague Tel-Ohmike TO-5

I had to repost this because I had reversed the primary and secondary coils of the transformer in the first video. Someone asked me to demo the turns ratio test on the TO-5. The TO-5 is the only version of the Tel-Ohmike that has this feature. The Tel-Ohmike was built from 1940 to 1971. This one was made in 1959 and is like brand new. I had to refurbish it some but overall, it was flawless. Upc...

I think I’ve said this before, but you have the best tone in the world! Wow!
thank you, that was fun, I am from Boston and saw them when I was in 3rd grade. At that time they had a case with the dental Dr tools. I have a lot of respect for people at that time. Amazing to think 30ty something men to each ship. Mostly crew. Mad respect for people. We are so sheltered
I was hoping it would have a normal headstock. 6105s come on the Music Man Axis, my favorite size.
Instead of doing a manual bias on the fixed bias pot, could you use a voltage attenuator like the carl hartman as an external bias to bias the amp cooler?(assuming the current bias on the amp is on the hotter end)
Thanks man...I am learning it and maybe will cover it with my band...keep on rockin'
I would like to see a comparison of; the brass, the steel, the titanium, the stainless steel, and the cheap zink pot metal. One tone two sustain and three weight. Is there any difference, enough to justify the cost and effort? Thanks.
What a great interview!
Thanks.
I have removed the spring before with a long drywall screw, it will grab the middle of the spring and pull out.
hi
Wowza amazing

Man it would be cool to hang out with you. I'm such a huge Hendrix fan and I've commented numerous times about my '64 6G6B. Thanks for this valuable information.
Thank you for all of your comments. How is your Bassman doing? I haven't followed my own advice and checked the bias on this amp in some time. I think I will soon.
@@millstap I got it in Sep 2019 and haven't had it serviced. I haven't opened the doghouse to look but everything with the exception of the tubes is all-original and dates to 1964 (transformers are '63). I'm the second owner. It's clean. The wood between the speakers that runs front to back is fragile though. Oxfords fart out a little bit when I run the Clavinet through it. I'm about to get it recapped and serviced but hesitant. Still has the 2-pronged plug. There's a guy I'm taking to that supposedly has a stellar reputation in the state but wants me to meet him at a gas station to hand it off. Paid 3200 for it.
The new tweed just doesn't sound as good as the original tweed. hahaha
Thanks 👍
Hello mate how is going? I recently discover your chanel that s amazing what you've done and fuck ya you v got the blues man ! Ahah excellent job ! I share the same passion, learning by ear everything I can on Jimi ! I wanted to ask, would you be keen one day to have a live chat together , guitar in hands, sharing some stuff about the holy master ? Would be great ! Got lot of licks to share too ! Thanks cheers mate all the best , keep Rocking !!
Hello Backpacker. Sorry it took me so long to respond. I've been away from my computer traveling around a little to see my family. Who are you touring with? I had an internet acquaintance that had moved to Australia a year or so ago but apparently he got deported for smoking or selling pot. He is a huge Hendrix guy and has a great collection of Uni-Vibes but he had to sell most of them so he had enough money to leave Australia. You caught me at the end of my UA-cam career unfortunately. After 15 years, I decided to call it quits to just enjoy playing again and not recording or editing or anything that takes away from playing. Let me know what you are up to and if your band has any videos on UA-cam. Jimi did teach me a lot. Since I grew up during his era, I noticed that my style was highly influenced by him when I started doing a few Hendrix videos on YT and it grew from there. That is what I wanted to do since the time I was young but ended up playing blues in California and some in New Orleans with some local bands. When I was young, I never played any Hendrix songs because I figured they were basically untouchable as far as tone and technique. But, one day I played my old 1960 Baseman on UA-cam and since it sounded so Hendrix'y to me, I decided to finally tackle his impeccable style of improv. I learned a lot from doing that and now my style is extremely influenced by him. I've always loved his use of the whammy bar and harmonic feedback. He is the only one that could use it to make a completely new type of instrument. I just turned 70 and my hands are starting to get arthritis but I still struggle to squeeze out what I can out of my Strats. I was around 14 years old when I started listening to Jimi when he first hit the scene by storm. What a genius he was.
Have you tried a Kluson aluminum block?
I have not. I always stay with traditional steel and the Kluson steel block was one of the better ones.
It appears the callaham block doesn’t cause the thin tone, it is the callaham bridge plate and saddles. I have a strat with the callaham block but fender bridge plate and saddle and it sounds the same as it did before.
I agree. The whole Callaham tremolo is definitely bright but the block alone is pretty good. I used several of them for years but do prefer the warmth of a traditional softer steel block. I think the Callaham hardened steel block adds a tad of brightness but not too much.
i had issues both times with musikraft, 1st neck had no countersink for the floyd nut screws and a ding on the edge of the fret board. 2nd purchase a couple years later, cheap cavity cover with no countersinking for the screws? looks out of place. also the route for the control cavity seems too deep, the wood is super thin, 3mm. is there any alternatives that make a legit kramer style neck and body?
Anyone still here in 2k24
Yes, I still play this amp every day. This video must be popping up more in feeds because I’m getting more comments lately.
FOCUS!
. A very beautifull Strato...❤
Thanks for imitating me
Hey Mil have you tasted the little Vintage Vibe by Formula B yet if so what’s your take on it? Thanks
12 years later and i have this bookmarked because its just so incredible
I watch it a lot of times after someone comments on it. Thank you. It is still pretty cool. I play it every day.
Is there any proof, cause I read Jimi used the EP as a booster on many recordings...?
After playing a real Uni-Vibe, I would say Jimi used it more for a preamp. It sounds so much like his tone and it would be easier to use too.
Okay…I was just planning to get an EP Booster Pedal…and I thought it could be a secret ingredient to Jimis sound i😊
The throb of the Funky Vibe is to hard. That’s what I don’t like about my Tiny Vibe. I like smoothness of the CV2 better. Might have to get one.
I recently switched back to my CV2 after playing a real Uni-Vibe. It does have a smoother, phase shifting type of vibe and the preamp sounds quite a bit better. Most of good sounding videos in the past were going through the CV2 preamp so I'm glad to get that tone back.
Nailed the tone and the vibe. Wonderful stuff. Are those Jimi gauge strings ?
Not back then. I was still using either 10-42 but probably 10-46 strings.
These modern guitar players with painted nails playing through their digital crap will never know real tone like this.
I’m getting ready to go crank it now. I play it everyday.
@millstap I might be purchasing an AA864 Bassman off a gentleman local to me. The speakers are non original. And need to be replaced. What speakers would you recommend? Love you vids! Thank you very much.
wow,i feel like its the 90s again and im on acid, love it! thanks millstap!
Lol. I think it is even older like the '70's.
@@millstap i was born in 1970,lol! thats my favorite era of rock music though!
I’ve got shrooomz
how many times the strings are winded areound the tuning pegs probably creates more angle than the height of the nut
Hi Millstap! I have a Bassman 59 reissue and I can't seem to get rid of that incisive ice pick sound when I crank it. I like to run presence at 6, mids at 9, bass at 4 and treble at 5. I'm looking for clear tones that saturate nicely without getting the sound all muffled up or boomy. I've tried blending channels but I would much rather use the bright channel on its own since it gives me more clarity. I just can't seem to retain that glassy tone without sacrificing upper frequencies. Let me know your thoughts. Fantastic playing by the way! as usual 😀
For starters, I don't think the Bassman is known for its glassy tone. That's where the blackface circuit circa. SRV shines. Unfortunately, Fender designed the Reissue based on components available today. Where the original used a 12AY7 in V1, the Reissue uses a 12AX7. That jumps the gain from 40% to a whopping 100%. Blending the channels, as you have heard, makes the gain even higher so it's pretty crunchy. Yes, stick with the Bright channel and try maybe a 5751 in V1 which has a 70% gain factor. I'm not sure the 12AY7 is compatible with the Reissue circuit but it's certainly worth a try. I always used 6072's which are low noise 12AY7's. It's very difficult to find NOS 12AY7's that are not microphonic. Once you lower the gain, you're closer to the original sound and then you can crank it a little more and get more power tube distortion which sounds much better. Plus, I only use NOS Tungsol 5881's. You might want to try the Reissue 5881. Even with these changes, the glass probably won't be there but for me, the more clean headroom I can get, the better all of my effects sound. You need a nice, clean, high headroom foundation with lots of bass which makes the Bassman the perfect choice. It was the most powerful amp of its day and that is why it became the Holy Grail amp for guitars. Everything evolved from that 5F6-A circuit. A great combination of amps is a Bassman with a Vibroverb or Super Reverb to bring in the glass of the blackface circuit. Those amps blend together very well.
Thanks for the quick reply! I'll try switching to the 5881
@@dhs4726 Tubes do make quite a difference. Which ones are in it now? I was alway obsessed (years ago) with New Old Stock tubes and I can't imagine how much money I spent and wasted too. But, I did find some great sounding tubes and RCA's usually were at the top of the heap. I have never taken the plunge of trying current production tubes so I'm not familiar with them even though I am eventually going to have to find the best sounding new tubes. They just don't make them like they used to. Now they don't last near as long as the tubes from the 50's and 60's. The NOS Tungsols are still readily available and at a decent price but I've heard good things about the new reproduction 5881's.
@@dhs4726 Are you good at biasing the power tubes? You can experiment a little to see if you like the bias a little colder and clean vs. hot and quick to distort.
@@millstap I've never biased the power tubes myself, but last time I got them checked it was 26ma per tube. My main issue is not being able to get more of the higher frequencies without that shrill ice pick sound, I've been going at it for months but still haven't succeeded. I'm using JJ Electronic ECC83S/12AX7 tubes, I think I'll be looking for some other options soon
Somehow, they seem both much larger and much smaller than I thought they would be
I know what you mean. They look like miniature large ships. 1492 technology.
Or... Just setup a box with a 250k pot and a couple of alligator clips, and 2 jacks, wire the pot the same way. You don't even have to open up the guitar!
Excellent video thnks so much for sharing this. For large bend,s I use two fingers, it doesn't hurt that way. It needs a bit of practice to get used to. I saw Tim Pierce doing it and what a difference it makes. No more painful bends. Cheers and thumbs up.
Thanks for the tip. My poor fingers need some help nowadays. They are even more painful on necks with vintage sized Fender frets like Jimi used.
El vibe Filmore es más abierto en armónico , el mawi más seco , parece más duro y el 68 igual , mi opinión subjetiva
The Fillmore has definitely been the more popular of all the versions.
Insane song in its on right. Id put it up there as one of the hardest hendrix songs
I'm grateful that Jimi left so much material to boggle the brains of us mere mortals.
I'm glad I did this because I can go back and learn it again. I haven't played it probably since I did this video.

Man you have a severe case of "been marketed to".If you believe that different tuners Change your tone (which ones? It's not just one singular tone.is it the the highs? The lows? The mids?) than surely you'd believe a different guitar strap makes your guitar sound different. Or what the material of the cable is made of. Or what shoes your wearing?
Brilliant demo thanks
